Four local friends, Shaun, Matt, James and Terry are uniting for a noble cause by growing monkey tail moustaches and hosting a charity night at the Black Horse pub in Cherhill on 30th November.

Their mission? To raise funds for the Wallace and Gromit Appeal, an initiative dedicated to supporting children receiving care at Bristol Children’s Hospital—a cause that holds personal significance for them all.

The inspiration behind the event stems from the experiences of Shaun’s daughter, Grace. Last September, the 14-year-old was diagnosed with Aplastic Anaemia, a rare and life-threatening bone marrow failure condition.

This shocking diagnosis came without warning, and over the following months, Grace endured numerous blood and platelet transfusions while battling severe infections, ultimately leading to a bone marrow transplant in February of this year. During Grace’s time in the hospital, the Wallace and Gromit Appeal provided crucial support, including accommodation for her mother, ensuring she could remain by Grace’s side during the most challenging nights.

James also shares a heartfelt connection to the cause through his daughter, Isla. Born prematurely at just 24 weeks and weighing only 517 grams, Isla spent her first 13 months in the hospital, undergoing several life-saving surgeries.

Her fragile start to life meant that family visits were limited during the COVID-19 pandemic, making the hospital staff an integral part of her support system. “While we hope no one ever has to rely on a charity like this, we know all too well that life can change in an instant,” James commented.

“By raising money at this event, we aim to ensure that other families can receive the same level of support we did during our toughest times.”

The friends have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the local community, with numerous businesses contributing incredible raffle prizes and auction items for the charity night.

Raffle tickets can be purchased at The High Street Barbers, Cross Country Tyres, and at the event itself.

“We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has helped us with this event,” Matt added.

“Every donation, big or small, makes a difference.”

The charity night will be held at the Black Horse in Cherhill on Saturday 30th November from 6pm. There will be live music, a quiz, a raffle and an auction.

To further support the cause, the friends encourage everyone to share the fundraising link to raise awareness and collect much-needed contributions for this deserving charity.
