Police in Calne have confirmed they are investigating after red and white paint markings of the St George’s Cross popped up across the town centre this week.
PCSO Mark Cook said: “We have received a report of criminal damage in connection with unknown persons marking various locations around Calne town centre with red and white paint. As with all reports of criminal damage, this will be fully investigated, utilising any available CCTV in those locations to help identify the offenders.
“Whilst we would not wish to discourage anyone from raising flags on their own property to show pride and patriotism, acts of criminal damage are not acceptable and will likely incur costs to businesses and Calne Town Council to remove the markings.”
The spray-painted flags, which mirror a trend seen in other towns and cities, first appeared during the summer’s 2025 Euros when many displayed the national flag to support the Lionesses. However, in recent weeks there has been a sharp rise in the number of markings locally and across the country.
Some groups behind similar displays elsewhere have said they are motivated by pride and patriotism. Others view the sudden spread of flags as provocative, particularly given ongoing tensions nationally around immigration.
Calne Town Council has already said that the flags painted on public property are considered vandalism and add an unnecessary burden on local resources. Wiltshire Council has also urged people to report such incidents via the MyWilts app.
Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward. Anyone who can help with the investigation is asked to call 101 quoting crime reference number 54250115900.
