The ongoing smell from the Lower Compton landfill site has continued to frustrate residents this week, with many saying the hot weather has made it impossible to keep their windows open.

With temperatures climbing above 30°C this week, social media has been flooded with fresh reports from people across Calne describing the smell as "awful", "horrendous" and saying it has left them feeling sick.

One resident wrote: "The smell is so strong I cannot even open my windows in this heatwave."

Others said they had reported the odour every day this week, while some questioned what more could be done and even suggested a protest outside the Hills landfill site.

The latest complaints come just days after more than 100 reports were made over a single weekend.

In response, the Environment Agency has announced plans for a public meeting in Calne, where residents will be able to speak directly to the Environment Agency, Wiltshire Council and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). A date and venue have yet to be confirmed.

In an update released on today, Friday (26 June), the Environment Agency said it understands people are frustrated and said the recent hot weather can make odours stronger and allow them to travel further.

It said officers visiting affected areas have generally found odours to be faint or short-lived, although it recognised that even occasional smells can have a significant impact on people's daily lives.

The Environment Agency said Hills is continuing permanent capping work at the landfill site, which is expected to be completed by the end of July. Once finished, further monitoring will take place to see whether it has reduced the smell, with further action promised if needed.

The UK Health Security Agency says the levels of hydrogen sulphide currently being detected are likely to pose a low risk to health. However, it says strong odours can still affect wellbeing, with some people experiencing headaches, nausea and dizziness, particularly after prolonged exposure.
