Repair work has been approved for the Lansdowne Monument near Calne, which has been hidden behind hoardings for more than a decade.

The landmark has been covered with wood, scaffolding and netting for around 13 years due to safety concerns over falling masonry.

Wiltshire Council has now given the National Trust permission to carry out repairs to the 38-metre obelisk.

The work is expected to include replacing damaged stone, repairing areas affected by frost and repointing the structure.

The council said the hoardings are a temporary safety measure and that the repairs will help secure the long-term future of the monument.

No start date has been confirmed, although the work must begin within three years. The National Trust has previously said the restoration is likely to take several years to complete.
