A public meeting will be held later this month to discuss plans that could change how traffic moves through Calne town centre — including a proposal to remove one of its main pedestrian crossings.
The meeting, organised by the Calne Area Board and Calne Town Council, will focus on traffic flow along the A4, particularly around the High Street junction and its nearby traffic lights and crossings.
Under the proposal, the pedestrian crossing at the junction of the High Street and the A4 could be removed. Supporters of the idea say the existing crossing outside the Lansdowne Strand Hotel, less than 100 metres away, provides a suitable alternative and could help to ease congestion.
Improving air quality is one of the main motivations behind the proposal. Calne has faced long-standing challenges with pollution, and councillors hope that reducing the amount of time vehicles spend idling at traffic lights will help lower emissions in the town centre.
However, councillors say any change to pedestrian infrastructure needs to be approached with care, balancing air-quality goals with safety concerns.
“We want to hear from residents about how much they use the crossings, what concerns they have, and what improvements they’d like to see,” said Cllr Augusta Urquhart-Nicholls.
Residents, business owners, and community groups are being encouraged to attend and share their views before any decisions are made.
The meeting will take place at 7pm on Monday 20th October at Calne Town Hall.
