Firefighters in Calne have issued a stark warning after being called to a woodland blaze off the town’s bypass for the second time this summer.
Crews were mobilised at 9.04pm yesterday evening, 21st August, to reports of a fire spreading at the base of a tree. On arrival, firefighters found a bonfire that had already begun climbing the trunk — but thanks to a quick call from a member of the public, the fire was brought under control before it could spread further.
Youths were seen in the area shortly before the blaze began. Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it was the second callout to the same location this summer.
A spokesperson said: “During this current warm and dry spell, fires can spread so quickly and cause devastating fires, if this could be your children please take time to educate them about the dangers of starting fires. DWFireRescue has been extremely busy dealing with challenging fires that often start from a small bonfire or bbq over the last few months.”
Police have been made aware of the incident.
