Motorists in Calne have been voicing frustration over delays caused by ongoing roadworks in the town centre.

The works, being carried out by Wiltshire Council, have seen temporary multi-way traffic lights installed along the A4 at Curzon Street and Market Hill as part of a major upgrade to ageing signals and pedestrian crossings.

Since work began at the end of March, drivers have reported lengthy queues and slow-moving traffic through the town, with frustration growing among both residents and local businesses.

The owner of Sole Luna in Church Street shared a photo of the traffic queue on social media after becoming stuck on her way to work.

She wrote: “The shop is back open today till 4pm (if I ever get there with the awful road works going on lately, currently been sat here about 10 minutes.)”

With schools due to return next week, there are concerns the situation could worsen as traffic levels increase.

The 12-week scheme includes replacing outdated traffic signal equipment, improving pedestrian crossings, and carrying out tree pruning and landscaping work around the junction.

Parking restrictions and temporary bus stop changes have also been introduced while the works are underway.

Concerns about disruption had been raised before the project began, particularly due to other ongoing roadworks in and around the town.

Meanwhile, Wiltshire Police have already been called to take action after complaints about drivers ignoring temporary traffic lights.

A Roads Policing Unit was deployed to The Strand on Saturday 4th April, where officers observed motorists for around an hour.

Four drivers were caught failing to stop at a red light and will each face three penalty points and a £100 fine.

Police have urged motorists to obey temporary signals, warning they are in place to keep both drivers and pedestrians safe during the works.
