It has been a day of celebration for pupils receiving their GCSE results, with students marking some impressive individual and overall achievements.
At St Mary’s Calne, 56% of the GCSEs taken by Year 11 pupils were awarded grades 8 or 9, with 31% achieving the top grade of 9.
Overall, 79% of grades were at 9-7, equivalent to A*-A under the previous grading system, while 37% of pupils achieved at least nine grades at 9-7.
Deputy Head Academic Michael Smyth said the results reflected both the pupils’ ambition and the support provided by teachers.
“We are delighted with these excellent GCSE results,” he said. “They are a reflection of the ambition of our wonderful pupils and the expert guidance and encouragement provided by St Mary’s teachers.”
Head Anne Wakefield also congratulated the Year 11 pupils and said the school was looking forward to seeing them continue their education in the St Mary’s Calne Sixth Form.
At The Springfields Academy, pupils are celebrating GCSEs alongside Functional Skills, Entry Level certificates and vocational qualifications, with the school emphasising the individual progress of its students.
For the seventh consecutive year, every Springfields student has secured a Post-16 placement, meaning the school has recorded 0% NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training).
Students will be moving on to a variety of destinations, including local colleges, specialist training, apprenticeships and employment.
One notable achievement is that of Harry, who has gained 20 qualifications, including six GCSEs with grades up to Grade 7.
His parents said they were particularly proud of his achievement following a difficult start to his education, including being excluded from primary school and spending six months out of school.
The school said students have also developed independence and confidence through opportunities including the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and practical life skills.
Springfields was recently rated Exceptional by Ofsted in the areas of Inclusion, Leadership and Personal Development, with the remaining categories rated Strong. The school also achieved Beacon Status from the National Autistic Society last month, a recognition currently held by only eight providers.
Headteacher Nicola Whitcombe said the day was an opportunity to recognise the progress made by all the students.
“Every achievement represents hard work, determination and the support of a dedicated team around each young person,” she said.
“Whether they are celebrating GCSEs, Functional Skills, Entry Level qualifications or other achievements, today is about recognising their successes and looking ahead to the exciting opportunities ahead.”
