Year 5 and 6 pupils at Saint Edmund's Catholic Primary School in Calne had the chance to put their local MP in the hot seat during a special visit exploring democracy, Parliament and current affairs.

Sarah Gibson, MP for Chippenham, visited the school to explain her role in Westminster and answer a wide range of questions from pupils, who quizzed her on topics including support for children with ADHD, women's representation in politics, LGBTQIA+ rights, energy bills, refugee rights and the future of rail services.

The session gave pupils an insight into how democracy works in the UK and the role MPs play in representing their communities, while encouraging them to engage with current affairs and public life.

Sarah also spoke about her work both in Westminster and across the Chippenham constituency, helping pupils understand how political decisions are made and how elected representatives support local residents.

The visit formed part of the school's commitment to developing pupils' understanding of citizenship and ensuring they feel confident that their voices matter.

Helen Biles-Wood, Executive Headteacher at Saint Edmund's Catholic Primary School, said: "We were delighted to welcome Sarah Gibson to Saint Edmund's and very grateful for her time. Our Year 5 and 6 pupils asked thoughtful questions and showed great curiosity throughout the session. It was a valuable opportunity, and the pupils certainly made the most of it."

Sharing her thoughts after the visit on Facebook, Sarah Gibson said: "I was delighted to visit Saint Edmund's Catholic Primary School in Calne this week and spend time with the fantastic Year 5 and 6 students.
