BBC Radio 2 presenter Richie Anderson will headline this year’s family pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk at Swindon’s Wyvern Theatre alongside Britain’s Got Talent finalist Jamie Leahey.

The broadcaster and television personality will play the Squire in the festive production, joining previously announced panto favourite David Ashley.

Richie, who spent six years as a regular voice on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show with Zoe Ball, now hosts his own Sunday evening programme and regularly covers shows hosted by presenters including Rylan, Dermot O’Leary and Sara Cox.

Away from radio, he has become a familiar face on television through appearances on Escape to the Country, Strictly Come Dancing, Celebrity MasterChef and Celebrity Gogglebox, as well as being part of the BBC’s Eurovision coverage.

Speaking about returning to pantomime following his debut last year, Richie said he loved the “pure escapism” of panto and the chance to make audiences laugh.

He added: “I also really enjoy spending time with such a talented cast and learning from them, so I can’t wait to come back again this year.

“Fun fact… I trained for my samba on Strictly in Swindon… during the very week I was voted out. So, I’m back to rewrite history and create a Swindon success story.”

Joining him is ventriloquist Jamie Leahey, who shot to national attention after finishing runner-up on Britain’s Got Talent in 2022.

Jamie will appear as Simon Trott alongside his puppet sidekick Chuck.

Since appearing on the ITV talent show, Jamie has performed internationally and appeared on television programmes including Saturday Mash-Up.

He said: “What I love most about panto is that there’s something for everyone – a guaranteed good time where all the family can come together, have a laugh and enjoy the magic.”

The cast will also feature Swindon panto regular David Ashley, with theatre bosses promising a production packed with audience participation, songs and festive fun.

Laura James, theatre director at the Wyvern, said Richie and Jamie would bring “energy, charisma and comic talent” to the production.

Jack and the Beanstalk tells the story of young Jack and his family as they battle poverty and an evil giant after exchanging their cow for a handful of magic beans.

Produced by Imagine Theatre, the show promises bigger sets, more comedy and plenty of traditional panto magic.

Tickets for the production, which is aimed at audiences aged four and above, are on sale now.
