The Children’s Emergency Unit at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has received a significant boost to its training capabilities with the acquistion of a new Down’s Syndrome manikin, thanks to secured NHS England education funding.
Gwen, the manikin will play a crucial role in enhancing the department's ability to provide optimal care for children with genetic conditions, particularly those with Trisomy 21.
The manikin allows for the practice of specific care techniques required for children with Down's Syndrome, a condition often associated with other congenital issues that increase the risk of sepsis, heart problems, and digestive complications.
Dr Phil Peacock, Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine, said: “Hundreds of young patients visit our Children’s Emergency Unit every week, and some of these youngsters might have additional or complex needs alongside the injury or illness they are needing care for. This includes children with Down's syndrome and other genetic conditions.
“It’s really important that our staff are equipped with the training and skills they need to provide exceptional care to every patient, and to recognise where they might need to adapt this care to meet the individual needs of a patient.”
The acquisition of Gwen aligns perfectly with the Trust's commitment to equality and inclusion. Recognising that the hospital environment can be distressing for some children, particularly those with sensory sensitivities, Gwen will also aid in training staff on adjustments to care delivery.
This compliments the recent opening of a sensory room within the unit, providing a calming space for children with additional needs.
Initial training sessions using Gwen commenced at the end of January, and the manikin is now set to become a key component of regular training for all staff in urgent and emergency care.
