The symptoms of meningitis have been highlighted after two young people died following an outbreak of the illness in Kent.
A sixth-form pupil from Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Faversham and a student from the University of Kent both died after falling ill during the outbreak in the Canterbury area.

More than 30,000 students, staff and family members have been contacted by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) as part of efforts to manage the situation.
Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. While it can be serious, it is treatable and early medical attention is important.
According to the NHS, symptoms can develop suddenly and may appear in any order. Not everyone will experience all of them.
Common symptoms include:
-
a high temperature (fever)
-
vomiting
-
a severe headache
-
cold hands and feet
-
muscle and joint pain
-
confusion
-
breathing quickly
-
pale, blotchy or mottled skin
-
spots or a rash
-
a stiff neck
-
sensitivity to bright lights
-
being very sleepy or difficult to wake
-
fits (seizures)
Some people may also develop septicaemia (blood poisoning), which can cause a rash that does not fade when a glass is pressed against it.
Health experts say symptoms can sometimes be confused with other illnesses such as flu, a heavy cold or even a hangover, particularly in the early stages.
Anyone who becomes seriously unwell or develops symptoms that could be linked to meningitis should seek urgent medical help by contacting NHS 111, going to A&E or calling 999 in an emergency.
There are currently no reports of cases linked to Wiltshire, but health guidance says being aware of the symptoms can help people seek treatment quickly if they become unwell.
More information about meningitis and its symptoms is available on the NHS website.
