A powerful new short film starring Amelie Pease has launched a national campaign highlighting the hidden impact of young onset dementia on families.

Little Rock, released on Wednesday 15th April, explores the effect of a parent being diagnosed with the condition at a younger age.

The film also features Neil Bell and Kate Hampson, and tells the story of teenager Lana as she navigates life while her father’s memory fades.

Through music, memory and changing family roles, it captures how dementia can reshape relationships, while showing how love can endure even as recognition begins to disappear.

The film marks the launch of the ‘Dementia Doesn’t Care’ campaign, led by the charity Younger People with Dementia.

The campaign aims to highlight the realities faced by families when dementia affects people under the age of 65.

More than 70,000 people in the UK are living with young onset dementia, with diagnosis taking an average of 4.4 years. The campaign will also raise awareness of support services, including children’s groups, young adult carers’ sessions and practical workshops for families.

Little Rock was written and directed by Nick Tree, who spent time speaking to children and young people living with a parent with dementia.

He said: “Little Rock shows that dementia doesn’t just affect the person diagnosed, it reshapes entire families and can steal parts of childhood too.”

Amy Pagan, from Younger People with Dementia, said the film aims to bring greater understanding of the condition.

She said: “Too often, the realities of young onset dementia, particularly its impact on children and families, go unseen and misunderstood.

“We hope it will encourage greater awareness, empathy and support.”

The charity provides specialist support for people living with dementia under 65, including workshops, peer groups and support for young carers.

The campaign also shares real-life stories from families affected by young onset dementia, highlighting the challenges they face and the support available.
