A Chippenham man has been given a suspended prison sentence after admitting giving police a false name and address during a traffic stop, leaving an innocent person wrongly implicated.

Aaron Chilcott, 25, of Wood Lane, appeared at Salisbury Crown Court on Friday (26 June), where he was sentenced to 10 months' imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty to an act intending to pervert the course of justice.

He was also banned from driving for four months and ordered to complete a 10-day rehabilitation requirement. In addition, he must pay £150 in court costs, a £187 victim surcharge and £500 compensation to the person whose identity he falsely gave.

The court heard that Chilcott was stopped by police in Bath Road, Chippenham, on 21 September 2023. His car was seized because it had no insurance, no MOT, tyres below the legal tread limit and he was driving otherwise than in accordance with his provisional licence.

When spoken to by officers, Chilcott gave a false name and address. He was arrested almost two years later, on 15 July 2025, in Trowbridge.

Roads Policing Officer James Salmond said: "Chilcott has been sentenced for providing false details to officers. This resulted in an innocent person being wrongly implicated in Chilcott's driving offences.

"Knowingly providing incorrect details to a police officer is a serious matter which can have serious implications."
