A £2.3 million transformation of Chippenham railway station has been completed, bringing new facilities for cyclists, improved bus connections and better accessibility for passengers.
The project focused on redeveloping the station’s south side forecourt, creating what partners say is a modern transport hub while respecting the site’s Grade II listed heritage.

A new enclosed cycle hub providing 200 spaces has been installed, alongside expanded bus capacity to improve rail and bus connections. A new taxi rank has also been created close to the platform exit.
The redesigned pick-up and drop-off area includes a widened entrance intended to remove a previous traffic pinch point and reduce delays.
Accessibility has also been improved with step-free ramp access and additional disabled parking.
New planting, trees and seating have been added to create a more welcoming public space, while natural stone paving has been used in the expanded pedestrian forecourt to reflect the historic character of the station.
New walking routes now connect directly to Chippenham College and the town centre. The changes follow earlier improvements including a new footbridge with lifts linking both sides of the railway.
Tom Pierpoint, industry programme director for Network Rail and Great Western Railway, said the project would support the town’s future growth.
“This transformation creates a station Chippenham can be proud of, providing modern facilities to support the growing community and the local economy,” he said.
“Continuing to invest in the railway, the new cycle hub and improved bus connections support sustainable travel, while enhanced accessibility ensures the station works for everyone it serves.”
Wiltshire Council worked with rail partners on the scheme.
Council leader Cllr Ian Thorn said: “By working together, we’ve delivered upgrades that strengthen Wiltshire’s transport network and make everyday travel easier for residents, businesses and visitors.”
Chippenham MP Sarah Gibson attended the official unveiling of the new facilities.
She said the improvements were “a fantastic investment in our town and those who rely on the railway”.
The work was funded by the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership and Wiltshire Council, in partnership with Network Rail and Great Western Railway.
