The driver who died yesterday in Pewsey following a two car collision has been named as Mark Hillier, a member of Pewsey Fire Crew.

Emergency services were called to the A345 Salisbury Road at about 6.50pm yesterday (12/10) following reports of a two vehicle RTC.

A Suzuki Grand Vitara, which had been travelling north east towards Pewsey, collided with a BMW X3 travelling in the opposite direction.

Mark Hillier sadly died at the scene, the driver of the BMW was uninjured.

The road remains closed this morning while Serious Collision Investigation teams work at the scene and recovery work takes place.

A police spokesperson said: "A local man in his 40's sadly died at the scene. His next of kin has been informed and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time – they are being supported by specialist trained family liaison officers."

CFO Ben Ansell has released the following statement this morning (13 October):

"Everyone at Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is deeply shocked at the tragic loss of a highly regarded firefighter. Watch Manager Mark Hillier passed away last night following a road traffic collision in Pewsey.  I know that I speak on behalf of the entire Service when I say that we are devastated by this news.  Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones at this extremely difficult time.

"Mark joined Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service in October 1995 as an on-call firefighter at Pewsey fire station, where he became Watch Manager.  Together with his on-call role, Mark also worked as a wholetime firefighter with Surrey Fire and Rescue Service for nine years, before transferring back to Dorset & Wiltshire, where he worked as a Watch Manager at Salisbury fire station.

"Mark was recognised in 2021 with a Making a Difference award for his outstanding work and commitment to organising the ‘laptops for kids’ initiative.

"In remembrance and as a mark of respect, our flags are flying at half-mast, across Dorset and Wiltshire."

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the collision, or anyone who may have dash cam footage, to contact the serious collision investigation team on 01225 694597 and quote log number 267 of October 12."
