A memorial service to honour 10 military personnel who died when their plane was shot down over Iraq 20 years ago, has taken place at the former RAF Lyneham this morning, 30th January.
On this day in 2005, the plane, which was based at the former RAF Lyneham, was hit by enemy fire on its way from Baghdad to Balad - all 10 men on board died.
Geoff Bridgman, a former senior aircraftman, was at the base when he heard the news and told the BBC how the events had left the "whole station in mourning".
Mr Bridgman, now 71, has laid a wreath at in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers remembrance garden at Lyneham to honour them every year since 2017. This became an annual tradition with members of Chippenham Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club joining him on the anniversary.
This year, to mark 20 years since the tragedy, Mr Bridgman arranged a special memorial service and a flypast to honour the crew of Hercules XV179 - call sign Hilton 22.
