Football fans heading to pubs to watch World Cup matches are being warned that bad behaviour could result in them being banned from venues across Wiltshire.

Wiltshire Police says pubgoers involved in violence, drug use, sexual harassment or anti-social behaviour could find themselves excluded from multiple venues through local Pubwatch schemes.

Since 2020, 11 Pubwatch groups have been established across Wiltshire and Swindon, bringing together pubs, clubs, police and local authorities to tackle alcohol-related crime and disorder.

The schemes allow venues to share information about troublesome individuals and work together to create a safer environment for customers and staff.

Wiltshire Police Licensing Officer Richard Tottle said the schemes play an important role in tackling poor behaviour in the night-time economy.

"Town Pubwatches meet monthly as part of the National Pubwatch Scheme, working closely with local policing teams and Wiltshire Council," he said.

"They share information on issues affecting the alcohol trade, particularly individuals displaying poor behaviour, which often results in bans from member venues.

"In west Wiltshire there are 10 schemes, and in towns like Melksham most venues are members. This means a ban in one venue applies across all, reinforcing a zero-tolerance approach to violence, sexual harassment either verbal or physical, drug misuse and antisocial behaviour."

With pubs expected to be busier during World Cup fixtures, police and licensees are urging fans to enjoy the matches responsibly.

Mr Tottle added: "Visitors are encouraged to drink responsibly, respect others, and be mindful of local residents when arriving and leaving venues."

Anthony Pierce, chairman of Melksham Pubwatch, said most people enjoy major sporting events without any problems, but a small minority can spoil the atmosphere for others.

"I know people are going to get excited, especially if England win, but my message is just behave," he said.

"Some of the bad behaviour we see is excessive drinking, drug use and fighting afterwards.

"Nobody wants troublemakers ruining their night. As long as we all work together, we can send the message out that we won't tolerate violence or drugs."

Pubwatch schemes operate across Wiltshire and Swindon, providing a forum for licensees to share information, discuss concerns and work together to improve safety in town centres.
