Police have been clamping down on shop lifters and anti-social behaviour in Chippenham as we head toward the busiests weeks of the year.

Officers have been carrying out plain clothes patrols in the town centre, Bath Road and Hathaway Retail Park during the Christmas shopping rush.

Police say no arrests have been made so far, but officers will continue to increase patrols on the lead up to the big day. During yesterday's patrol, officers were made aware of a number of people begging in Chippenham High Street.

PC Aimee Jenkins said: "Officers have spoken with these individuals and we understand they are travelling to the town to beg during the busy day time shopping hours. These people are not homeless and we would advice people not to hand over their money, but instead to support charities for the homeless. These charities will support those in need and direct them to the relevant agencies depending on their situation and needs."

If you suspect shoplifting or anti-social behaviour in any shopping centres over the festive period please call 101 or 999 in an emergency.
