Residents are being reminded that river fishing is now closed until mid-June, with police stepping up patrols across Wiltshire.

The annual close season, which runs until 15th June, is in place to protect fish and wildlife during key breeding months.

Calne Police say they will be increasing patrols at vulnerable and high-risk locations during this period, and are urging the public to report anyone seen fishing on rivers.

Officers, PCSOs and Environment Agency staff also have the authority to check rod licences.

Anyone aged 13 or over must have a valid licence when fishing for freshwater species, including salmon, trout and eels. While licences are free for those aged 13 to 16, they must still be obtained before fishing.

The close season applies to rivers and other open waters, and is designed to support fish populations and maintain healthy waterways.

Residents walking near local rivers are being asked to remain vigilant and report any suspected illegal fishing.
