Police are urging retailers to be vigilant after hundreds of pounds worth of counterfeit notes were used in Chippenham town centre.

Wiltshire Police said several counterfeit notes have been handed to the local Neighbourhood Policing Team by retailers in recent days.

Officers believe those responsible are making multiple purchases of low-value items in order to pass on the fake notes.

Police said the counterfeit currency is mainly Scottish or Irish notes and that offenders appear to be targeting younger retail workers.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: "In recent days, several hundreds of pounds worth of counterfeit notes have been handed over to our local Neighbourhood team from retailers in Chippenham town centre.

"During these incidents, offenders are making numerous transactions for small items to dispose of the notes. It is mostly counterfeit Scottish or Irish currency and offenders appear to be targeting young retail workers."

The force said neighbourhood officers will continue working with local retailers to help them identify counterfeit notes and report suspicious activity.

The warning comes during Neighbourhood Policing Week of Action.
