A major search and rescue operation is underway in Chippenham this morning (Tuesday 31st March) after concerns were raised for a man’s welfare.
Wiltshire Police say officers were called to the Town Bridge area at around 2.40am, with emergency services continuing to search the River Avon.
Specialist teams, including Wiltshire Search and Rescue and underwater search officers from Avon and Somerset Police, remain at the scene.
The road has been closed on The Bridge both ways from Monkton Hill to High Street. There is no access to Bath Road car park or Island Park.
A police spokesperson said residents can expect to see a significant emergency service presence in the area while enquiries continue.
Superintendent James Brain has urged residents to avoid the Town Bridge area where possible and to use alternative routes while the operation is ongoing.
Police are appealing for information from anyone who may have been in the area during the early hours of this morning.
Anyone with information is asked to call 101, or 999 in an emergency, quoting log number 26 of Tuesday 31st March.
