The Wiltshire Community Foundation has issued an urgent appeal for donations to support its Surviving Winter programme, which provides critical assistance to older and vulnerable residents in Wiltshire and Swindon during the coldest months of the year.
With the winter season upon us and rising energy costs affecting many in the community, the need for support has never been greater.
Launched over 14 years ago, the Surviving Winter programme has been a lifeline for thousands facing the harsh reality of fuel poverty. Last year alone, the initiative provided vital support to 2,855 individuals, offering not only fuel grants but also valuable resources and guidance in collaboration with community partners such as Age UK Wiltshire, Citizens Advice in Wiltshire and Swindon, and the Centre for Sustainable Energy.
This year, the charity is particularly concerned following the recent rises in energy costs, which have left many individuals contemplating the difficult choice between heating and eating. As Fiona Oliver, joint Chief Executive of Wiltshire Community Foundation, points out: “January is often thought of as one of the darkest and coldest months of the year. There are those who are too scared to turn on their heating, and that is why we are appealing for donations for our Surviving Winter campaign.”
The programme has proven to be a crucial support system for those in need. Take the case of Mrs. J, a 75-year-old woman who had never asked for help until her situation became desperate. With assistance from Age UK Wiltshire, Mrs. J was awarded a Surviving Winter grant and received support in applying for vital benefits, resulting in an increase of her household income by £156 per week. In total, the programme has contributed to an annual increase in household income of over £1.5 million for those it supports.
The plight of vulnerable residents across Wiltshire underscores the need for community members to rally together. “Nobody should be in the position where they are forced to make the heartbreaking decision of choosing between heating or eating,” Oliver added. “By donating to this campaign, we can provide the financial aid and crucial advice needed to help individuals out of fuel poverty and ensure they can stay warm and safe during the winter months.”
The need for donations to the Surviving Winter programme has never been more pressing, and every contribution makes a tangible difference in the lives of those who are struggling. Age UK Wiltshire echoes this sentiment, emphasising the importance of the combined approach that includes both financial support and expert advice.
