Wiltshire Council is proposing changes to its parking plans after receiving 1,762 responses to a public consultation.
The council has revised several of its original proposals, including keeping Sunday charging from 10am, limiting extended charging hours to short-stay car parks only and no longer proposing to reintroduce Sunday on-street parking charges in Salisbury.
However, it is still proposing an average 20% increase in pay-and-display parking charges, rounded to the nearest 10p. The council said parking charges have not increased since 2022, while inflation has risen by around 28%.
If approved, the changes will come into effect on 1st September.
Councillor Martin Smith, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: "We received a significant response to the consultation and we have listened carefully to what people, businesses and local councils told us.
"While there remains a need to update parking charges, which have not increased since 2022, we are looking to change course on a number of proposals in direct response to the feedback we received."
Under the revised proposals:
- Sunday charging will continue to start at 10am rather than 7am.
- Charging hours will be extended to 7am-7pm in short-stay car parks only, with long-stay car parks remaining 8am-6pm (except Dunns Lane in Castle Combe).
- Sunday tariffs will match weekday charges in short-stay car parks, while long-stay car parks will continue to have a day-rate.
- Plans to reintroduce Sunday on-street parking charges in Salisbury have been dropped.
- Sunday on-street charging will not be introduced in Cross Hayes, Malmesbury or Marlborough High Street.
- Season tickets and permits will increase in line with the revised tariffs.
- Weekend charges are proposed for selected council-owned car parks, including County Hall in Trowbridge and the Bridge Centre in Chippenham.
The proposals will now go through the council's decision-making process before a final decision is made.
