Wiltshire Police have established their first Independent Advisory Group (IAG) in a significant move aimed at addressing the pressing issue of violence against women and girls (VAWG).

This initiative brings together a diverse group of individuals from Wiltshire and Swindon who have an interest in tackling VAWG and serving as a critical friend to the Force.

The newly formed group offers members the unique opportunity to observe and provide input on various policing practices within the region.

The initiative is part of Wiltshire Police's commitment to enhancing their services and ensuring that they meet the needs of victims more effectively. Detective Chief Inspector Lucy Thorne expressed her enthusiasm for the group, stating, "Over the past six months, we have worked closely with some fantastic people in our community who are dedicated to ending violence against women and girls. I am thrilled that we have created a group of passionate individuals from a range of backgrounds who will now act as advisors on how we improve our service."

The IAG comprises not only residents of Wiltshire and Swindon but also professionals who have a vested interest in VAWG issues. Members include representatives from the judiciary, local businesses, activists, and domestic abuse support groups. Their insights are expected to play a vital role in shaping how police tackle VAWG, aiding in crime detection and enhancing support for victims.

"This collaboration will not only help in how we detect crimes but also in providing a better service to victims and informing new ideas and initiatives around making women and girls safer in our county,” added Thorne.

The group is chaired by Lady Lansdowne, The Marchioness of Lansdowne, who has been vocal about her concerns regarding the rise of violence against women and girls in society. She remarked, "I am proud that the EVAWG (Ending Violence Against Women and Girls Wiltshire) coalition is now working with Wiltshire Police and will form their Independent Advisory Group on all VAWG matters. I am honored to chair this group and will do all in my power to support the work of the police and act as independent advisors."

Lady Lansdowne emphasised the urgency of addressing violence and abuse against women and girls, stating, "Eradication of all forms of violence and abuse against women and girls must be a top priority, and I am determined to help in any way I can."

The establishment of the Independent Advisory Group marks a positive step toward fostering community engagement in policing and creating a safer environment for women and girls across Wiltshire and Swindon.

As the group embarks on its mission, the hope is that their collective efforts will lead to meaningful change and a stronger response to the challenge of VAWG.
