Wiltshire Police is urging people to use 999 responsibly after recording its busiest day for emergency calls on record.
The force says it dealt with more than 12,000 incidents in June, a 7.4 per cent increase compared with the same month last year. During the same period, 999 call volumes rose by 9.1 per cent.
More than 12,000 incidents were recorded in June, a 7.4 per cent increase compared with the same month last year. During the same period, 999 call volumes rose by 9.1 per cent.
The busiest day came on Saturday 27th June, when control room staff answered 578 emergency calls in 24 hours - the highest number ever recorded by Wiltshire Police.
Police said a combination of hot weather, World Cup matches and large community events contributed to the increase in demand.
As the busy summer period continues, Wiltshire Police is reminding people to only dial 999 if there is an immediate danger to life, a crime is in progress or urgent police assistance is needed.
Non-emergencies can be reported online or in person at one of the force's public enquiry offices. Those wanting an update on an existing case are also being encouraged to contact the investigating officer directly or use the online case update service where possible.
Chief Superintendent Guy Elkins said: "We have seen an unprecedented number of calls recently, and we want to ensure that those in need can get hold of us.
"By reporting non-emergencies online, this can help to free up 101 lines for those who are not able to use the online reporting service. Our online reports are handled by the same operators as our calls, so will still be reviewed promptly and with the same care and attention."
