What started as a way to keep unemployed men fit in Chesterfield, has blossomed into a nationwide passion for walking football, and in Calne, a dedicated group of over-65s are putting their own spin on the game while remembering cherished friends.

For eleven years, the Beversbrook Sports Facility has been home to the "Walk-Ball" group, offering a modified version of walking football tailored to players in their golden years.

Recognising that competing with 50-year-olds can be challenging for those in their 70s and 80s, Tony Martin and John Rumming founded the Over 65s games.

They've not only introduced an age restriction, but also adapted the rules to ensure everyone gets a chance to shine. Walk-Ball emphasises strict adherence to walking, with any hint of running resulting in an immediate whistle. Other rules include a four-touch limit to encourage passing, 'no contact,' and restrictions on tackling from behind, heading, and high balls.

"The joy of making a good pass, scoring a goal, or stopping one is exactly the same at 80 as it is at 18," explains Walk-Ball organiser, Mo Needham.

The group boasts impressive talent, with 83-year-old Alan Rosekilly showcasing remarkable goalkeeping skills 'still flinging himself around like a cat and stopping most shots!' and 81-year-old Mike Luggar who can 'sidestep a defender and fire home with great accuracy'. demonstrating impressive striking ability.

However, the close-knit community has also experienced loss. In the last eleven years, they have lost three friends; Lenny, John and Tym. To honour their memory, the group will be hosting a Commemorative Match on Monday, 12th May at Beversbrook Sports Centre, starting at 1:30 pm.

The friendly match will feature numerous substitutions, focusing on camaraderie rather than competition. It is hoped that Roz, the wife of the late John, will be there to present a special trophy and medals donated by Stu Ritchie and Mo Needham.

A buffet and hot drinks, generously provided by Alan and Dorothy Jones, will follow the game, where eulogies will be shared for Lenny, John, and Tym.

The match will serve as a fundraiser for Prostate Cancer UK, a cause close to the group's heart as Tym passed away from the disease late last year. "Covid prevented him from having regular checkups and so the cancer stepped in." explained Mo.

"We make great new friends at Walk-Ball, but we lose some too.  We will remember them on Monday."

Players will donate between £10-£50 to play, and all donations will go to the charity.

Calne Town Council and Beversbrook have waived playing fees for the event. The group hopes to raise £400.
