VOLUNTEERS at a Calne charity which supports our community's lonely and vulnerable residents, were devasted to find the centre had been targeted by thieves last week.

Marden Community Hub on Church Street in Calne offer hot meals, coffee and company, a community fridge and larder, access to computers and internet and a place to practice music and enjoy arts and crafts.

In the early hours of Friday morning, chair of the hub, Dawn Perkins, was woken by police to be told that the doors to the centre had been smashed in, cameras turned off and the till had been taken. It is estimated that the till contained about £200.

Volunteer Carol Lavery told us: "How can anyone do this to a place that looks after the vulnerable and lonely? It's despicable. However, I'm positive we will not be beaten, we will continue somehow."

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police told us: “We are appealing for witnesses following a break in at the Calne Community Centre in Church Street, Calne, during which around £200 of cash was taken. The incident took place shortly before midnight on Thursday, November 14."

Since the break-in Carol says she and Dawn have been overwhelmed by the reaction from the community who have been sending messages of support - two residents have helped with security repairs too. Carol added: "We will NOT let this stop us. Bingo night 22nd November, 6.00p.m. Please be here before 6.30p.m. As we then lock the doors for security reasons."

Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference 54240134839.
