A formal warning was issued to a local boy on 9th January after he was spotted riding an e-scooter on Church Street, prompting Calne Police to reiterate their stance on the use of these vehicles.
PCSO Mark Cook said: “We have been targeting this issue after concerns were raised to us by members of the community.”
The warning comes on the heels of several incidents where children have been seen in possession of e-scooters throughout Calne, despite prior advisories issued before Christmas.
PCSO Mark Cook added: “Unfortunately, it appears that this advice has not been taken onboard by some parents.”
E-scooters are classified as Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs) and are treated as motor vehicles under UK law. This classification requires compliance with legal requirements that include MOT, licensing, tax, and insurance.
Due to the absence of number plates, signaling ability, and visible rear lights, riding e-scooters on public roads is illegal. Moreover, it is against the law to use privately-owned e-scooters in any public place, including pavements, parks and town centres.
The only legal usage of a privately-owned e-scooter is on private property, with the landowner's consent. Calne Police have emphasised the importance of education regarding e-scooter laws, stating: “Our focus remains on using a problem-solving approach, intervention, and engagement with riders to make them aware of the law regarding e-scooters.”
Parents are urged to refrain from purchasing e-scooters for their children until they fully understand the regulations, as any child caught riding one will face a warning, and repeat offenders will have their e-scooters seized and could be reported for legal violations.
For further information on e-scooter regulations, residents are encouraged to visit the Wiltshire Police website for comprehensive guidance.
