Wales & West Utilities have been busy working on a gas leak that has been identified at the Town Hall, but it is not the source of the bad odour that has been the hot topic of discussion over recent weeks.

The great debate of where the horrible smell was stemming from has been ongoing over the last few weeks with many describing it as 'eggy', 'gassy' 'stagnant' and 'sulphurous' and most pungent in the early hours of the morning.

Many residents were convinced the smell was coming from the nearby landfill site at Compton Bassett, other residents said they had noticed the odour was particularly pungent in the centre of town.

Wessex Water workers investigated potential issues with its sewerage assets but found no problems and the Environment Agency, worked with Wiltshire Council to identify the source of the smell. "We are visiting sites we regulate to ensure that they are compliant with their permits," an agency spokesperson explained recently.

Whilst out investigating the source of the smell, Cllr Sam Pearce-Kearney noticed a smell of gas near to the Town Hall and reported it.

Today, several workers from Wales & West Utilities are currently working on site to repair the leak - the online work advice says works are expected until tomorrow, 4th April.

Ryan Davies, Wales & West Utilities Gas Emergency Service Manager for Calne, said:

"We have been working in the Cox’s Hill area of Calne to fix a small leak on a gas pipe running beside the road.

“Our engineers have worked as safely and as quickly as possible and have now fixed the leak.

“We are aware of reports of a strange smell in the area, and we can confirm that while we do not know the source of the smell, it is not related to our work or the mains gas network.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding of local residents and road users while we carried out this essential repair.”
