Residents of Calne are being warned that Nottingham Knockers are operating in our area again.

There have been several reports from across Calne that callers have been knocking at doors claiming to have been released from prison and say they are working on a rehabilitation scheme with a charity called Helping Hands.

They have laminated fake trader badges which they briefly flash before trying to sell various household items. Many people will purchase items and pay them something, just to get rid of them.

There have been cases of elderly residents handing over large sums of money as they can be quite aggressive.

The price for whatever has been purchased usually comes to a note – usually £10. The householder disappears to get this – this is when the scam begins, according to the police. When the note is handed over, the lad examines the condition and how long it took the person to get it. If it is crumpled, they accept it and move on. If it is crisp flat and new – they are much more interested and may engage the person in more conversation, to obtain details about them.

The addresses of elderly or vulnerable people are all noted and the information and addresses are then sold on to criminal gangs.

Police say: "Please be vigilant, do not purchase anything and never hand over cash on your doorstep. If you feel threatened, close the door and contact police.

"Always ensure your property is fully secure. Look out for your elderly neighbours. The items offered are often of low quality and advertised at inflated prices.

"The “sales pitches” can also be part of a wider operation to identify burglary targets. Those involved may claim to be part of rehabilitation schemes and could produce ID cards – these are entirely false and have no legal bearing. Never buy anything from these people and report them to police on 101 -  always dial 999 in an emergency."

Residents are urged to warn neighbours, particularly the elderly or vulnerable, not to open the door to strangers or buy or sell on the doorstep. Always use the door chain when answering the door, if you are not sure do not open the door.
