Whether you have an existing business website or you’re hoping to commission one in 2024, here are five key things to know about websites in 2024.

1. Websites are still a vital tool to reach customers

By the end of 2023 over five billion people were using the internet, 65% of the world’s population. An online presence is essential for all businesses, and only operating on social media is risky. You don’t own your social media accounts and you’re vulnerable to changes in strategy by tech bosses. Elon Musk’s impact on Twitter, now X, has been huge and its future is by no means certain.

A website is yours - you control the content, and it can’t be taken away, provided you continue to pay a small yearly charge for secure hosting.

2. Make sure yours is mobile optimised

Around half of the people who visit your website will be using a smartphone or a tablet to view it. That means the website needs to display and work properly on all devices - computers, laptops, and smartphones. Potential customers will quickly click away if it doesn’t. Check your website is mobile optimised, and if you’re having a new website built, make sure your designer will optimise it for you.

3. Nail homepage basics

Website visitors expect to be able to find information quickly and easily. Make sure your homepage loads quickly and displays the following information clearly: what your business does, who you do it for and how they can learn more. You can position this as a problem solving service (e.g. Do you need a tax accountant? We take care of your business taxes to keep you compliant and save you money. Book a discovery call with us here).

4. Make it easy to navigate

Some visitors will want to learn more about you before they contact you, so make sure they can easily find an ‘about us’ or ‘our team' page without having to search the site. If you have a blog which demonstrates your sector expertise and knowledge, have that linked from your homepage and clearly displayed in the menu too.

5. Make it work hard for you

If you leave a website alone, it will work as a shop front and channel for customers to contact you, but it could work harder. By updating page content or uploading a blog once a month, you’ll appear higher in results pages when people are looking for a business like yours. Try to ensure your content includes the relevant keywords (i.e. small business accountant in Bristol) people use when they search.
